Actually, I had made up my mind not to open the deluxe box "PINK FLOYD - THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON - 50 YEARS" until the weekend after a work-intensive week with plenty of time, rest and leisure, and to take a thorough look at it accordingly. Ultimately, however, I was too curious not to check and listen on Friday evening to see whether the box set really justifies the purchase price of 300 euros in terms of content and, above all, quality. It's already very late now (no, it's already Saturday morning) and I'm sure I'll be able to discover a lot more over the next few days, but I'd like to record this much for myself at this point in time: the quality of the Box(es) and contents of this one is simply breathtaking. I put on white gloves to unpack the box set and wash the vinyl because the prints, surfaces and vinyl pressings are incredibly valuable, beautiful to look at, but also correspondingly sensitive. The Dolby Atmos Mix is also (only) with surround equipment (5.1) a real treat with a fat and at the same time detailed sound. The mastering of the DSOTM vinyl from 2023 (original album) was again done in the tried and tested way by James Guthrie and Joel Plante; Bernie Grundman (engraved “BG”) is identified as Cutting Engineer. First released on vinyl, The Dark Side Of The Moon - Live At Wembley, 1974 was mastered by Andy Jackson; Stuart Hawkes (engraving "StU") is responsible for this vinyl cut. I had heard it beforehand, was able to read it on the respective gatefold cover and, due to the indescribably bad experience with the ANIMALS 2018 REMIX (vinyl pressing), made the worst possible associations with the following statement: "Made and Printed in the Netherlands". . Now both LPs are spinning on my brand new turntable (REGA PLANAR 10 with APHETA 3 MC CARTRIDGE) ... and what can I report? The vinyl lies completely flat on the plate and there are (almost) no background noises coming from the vinyl - dead silence describes it best. Did the folks at Record Industry in the Netherlands put all the low quality vinyl into the ANIMALS REMIX 2018 production, lastly overhauling the pressing machines and/or completing the onboarding of new staff? It doesn't matter, against this background this 50th Anniversary Box Set receives the rating "Excellent" from me. I come to the naturally purely subjective conclusion that the purchase of this quite high-priced box set is worthwhile even if you own the IMMERSION box (released in 2011). I even go so far as to make a recommendation; Especially because, as far as I know, no separate release of the 2023 vinyl reissue (original album) has been announced so far. Personally, I will be celebrating this anniversary edition with the April 19 limited release of the 50th Anniversary SACD Multi-ch Hybrid Edition (7-inch Cardboard Sleeve Mini LP, including "golden Obi" by the 4 Channel Quadraphonic released in Japan in the 1970s Edition), even if this surround mix by James Guthrie is not new and it will be the fourth DSOTM-SACD in my collection. USE SERIES, 30th Anniversary Edition) but the 2023 reissue could become my new dark side vinyl reference... in the absence of the UK first pressing of course.
