This is a prime example of what "the album as art" is all about. It all gets covered here. Gritty rock, gorgeous ballads, bold experimentation, exquisite orchestration, solid song structure, catchy tunes, etc. You name it!!! And the whole band is showcased. This album reaches where few others can. Considering it was 1966 and there was nothing else like it at the time. The Beatles set the tone for everything else to come with this album. Rubber Soul may have been the first "true rock album" but Revolver took it to a whole new place that was previously untouched. Even the holy Sgt. Pepper doesn't touch the eccentricity that this album does. When considering a truly great album, I feel that it is necessary to consider songwriting, musicianship, production, palatability, originality, creativity and how well it holds up over time. This has it all. Most people forget that sounds like this were unprecedented at the time. The greatest rock band of all time doing what they did best, raising the bar for everyone else!
