Like all, or most, successful artistic forms that rise as a discordant expression, and reaction, to the conventional voice, Hip Hop quite quickly found its long term economic stability in the hands of the record companies, in this case. However late this very good soundtrack comes in the long story, it will probably be used as an example of commercial acceptability. The album is full of great tracks, but the overall feel of the album is one which will attract music lovers from a far wider spectrum that to which the represented artists belong. There will be debate as to whether the work will better help the career of its progenitor, Kendrick Lamar or that of more immediately "commercial" artists like The Weeknd, but right now it is hard to see Lamar´s taking a Jay Z type dip, when everything he touches turns to gold.
We can only hope that our offspring will come to respect Lamar for his genius and musical importance with more energy and understanding than we have given to his Motown, Atlantic & Stax predecessors.
