Some Cities was the third studio album from the Doves. It was also the band’s second consecutive #1 album in the UK album chart. the album was conceived as a rawer, stripped-down record, and conceptually touches upon the physical changes of the band's hometown of Manchester, as well as emotional transformations. The album features the band's second-highest charting single, "Black and White Town", which peaked at number 6 on the UK Singles Chart. Two further singles from the album—"Snowden" and "Sky Starts Falling"—also fared moderately well on the chart, peaking at number 17 and 45, respectively.

I’ve always almost liked this band. With Some Cities, I think they’re finally winning me over. The sound here is much more raw than their last album, generally eschewing hip production techniques for crisp-yet-fuzzy rock ‘n’ roll with mature pop hooks and lots of gorgeous guitar lines. The weak point of the band remains lead singer Jimi Goodwin, who ranges from inoffensive to pretty decent, but is rarely captivating. Still, this album is insidiously appealing and has many rewards; musical nuggets that come to feel like classic moments from the history of rock.
